Colonel Charles H. MacDonald
DuBois-Born WW II Ace
Charles Henry "Mac" MacDonald, was born in Dubois on November 23, 1914.
He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1938 and received his Army Air Corp wings and his commission
as a second lieutenant in 1939. He was stationed with the 18th Pursuit Group at Wheeler Field, Hawaii
and was there when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
He went on to become a ranking combat fighter Ace in the Pacific and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross,
the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.
One biographer commented, " ... he was an outstanding pilot, an exceptional marksman, and
a combat tactician who had few equals. This quiet, unassuming man who rarely betrayed anger
was respected and loved by the officers and enlisted men who served under him.
He was, in short, one of the great air combat leaders of World War II."
